Disney Cruise Line reached a significant milestone in the construction of their third LNG-fueled cruise ship, Disney Destiny, with the keel laying ceremony at the Meyer Werft yard in Germany. This new ship is part of the company’s expansion of its cruise operations, with five ships currently in operation and three more under construction at Meyer. The first ship of this new class, Disney Wish, entered service in 2022.
The keel laying ceremony for Disney Destiny took place as work continues on the Disney Treasure, set to be delivered later this year. The new ship will have a design theme of “Heroes and Villains,” incorporating beloved Disney stories and characters. Disney also recently acquired the unfinished Global Dream, which will be converted into the Disney Adventure and enter service in 2025.
The order for the Disney Destiny and other upcoming ships is crucial for Meyer Werft, providing work for the shipyard and its employees. Meyer is also working on other projects, including the Silver Ray for Silversea Cruises and NYK’s Asuka III. Additionally, Meyer recently secured a contract with Carnival Corporation to build another LNG-fueled cruise ship, diversifying its operations beyond cruise ships to rebuild its business post-pandemic.
