MHSS has warned ship owners and managers about the potential impact on the mental health of seafarers transiting the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden due to the threat of attacks by sea or air. Since November 19, 2023, there have been over 20 attacks on merchant ships in these areas, including small boat, missile, and drone attacks, according to US Central Command.

The founder of MHSS, Charles Watkins, emphasized the uncertainty and anxiety experienced by seafarers, especially as they hear about other ships being attacked. The company highlighted the complex nature of trauma responses and the possibility of delayed emotional effects on seafarers caught up in an attack.

In response to the rising toll on seafarer mental health, MHSS announced that it would provide critical mental health support to vessels operating in high-risk areas on a pro bono basis. This support will include techniques to bolster mental resilience, self-care routines, and assistance for those suffering from traumatic stress symptoms. The company aims to help seafarers realize that their reactions are normal and to assist them in taking care of their mental well-being during these challenging times.
