Nautilus International Advocates for Seafarers’ Rights and Responsible AI Use

Nautilus International members at the Union’s UK Branch Conference, held online on November 20, 2024, unanimously voted for two motions. The first motion reaffirms support for striking seafarers at the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA), highlighting concerns over long hours, low pay, and poor working conditions. The second motion commits Nautilus to campaign for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in the maritime industry, emphasizing the need for safeguards to protect the interests of seafarers and ensure the safe integration of AI technology.

The motion in solidarity with RFA members calls for fair pay and improved working conditions, urging the UK government to recognize the valuable contribution of RFA personnel to national security. It emphasizes the importance of supporting these workers in their ongoing dispute with the Ministry of Defence and RFA. The motion on responsible AI use addresses concerns about shipowners relaxing watchkeeping standards on the bridge, stressing the need for AI to enhance decision-making rather than replace skilled seafarers.

The Union’s commitment to the responsible integration of AI includes advocating for stringent performance standards for AI systems in safety-critical decision-making and promoting continuous training and upskilling for UK seafarers and maritime professionals. Nautilus Council is tasked with campaigning for these initiatives to ensure that AI technology is implemented in a way that respects the expertise of maritime professionals and enhances safety and working conditions. The motions passed at the Branch Conference reflect the Union’s dedication to supporting its members and advocating for their rights in the maritime industry.
