SeaFjord Energy, a Swedish company, is taking action to reduce carbon emissions in the maritime industry by selecting ABB’s electric power and propulsion system for its innovative e-bunker vessel concept. This concept aims to provide a new way of supplying energy to ships at sea and in ports. Developed in collaboration with FKAB Marine Design and Bureau Veritas, the vessel features ABB’s Dynafin propulsion and Onboard DC Grid power system platform to enhance operational efficiency crucial for optimizing energy onboard. Additionally, the vessel will include a large battery pack to provide renewable energy in areas where traditional shore power infrastructure is limited.
The e-bunker vessel concept envisions a unique charging mechanism that allows the vessel to fill its batteries through a shore connection or draw energy directly from a wind farm, utilizing ABB’s charging system. ABB’s technology will also be used to provide power to other vessels at sea, delivering up to 50 megawatts of power to ships of various sizes. The vessel’s design relies on ABB Dynafin propulsion to maximize efficiency and responsiveness in different operational scenarios, generating propulsion and steering forces simultaneously to minimize energy consumption.
Furthermore, the vessel’s propulsors are designed to integrate seamlessly with ABB’s highly customizable Onboard DC Grid power system platform, aiming to further enhance overall performance. ABB’s PEMS, a power and energy management system, serves as the core of the vessel’s combined power and control, ensuring optimal use of total power resources in a safe, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly manner. Andreas Hagberg from FKAB Marine Design expressed gratitude for being part of the innovative e-bunker design, emphasizing the project’s alignment with FKAB’s commitment to participating in groundbreaking projects. Herman Spilker from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore commended the e-bunker vessel concept for advancing sustainable maritime solutions while upholding high safety and environmental standards.
