Marine Jet Power (MJP) and Derecktor Shipyards New York have launched and christened two pioneering passenger ferries for Chatham Area Transit (CAT) in Savannah, Georgia. These ferries, named The Juliette Gordon Low II and The Susie King Taylor II, are the first hybrid passenger ferries in the United States powered by waterjet propulsion. Measuring 65 feet in length and powered by MJP UltraJet 305 waterjets, these vessels incorporate cutting-edge hybrid technology, marking a new era in sustainable maritime transportation. Operating on short routes between three local landings, these ferries are ideally suited for hybrid propulsion.

The innovative serial hybrid system on these ferries allows for optimized power management, resulting in increased efficiency and reduced environmental impact. The combination of hybrid technology and waterjets, known for their shallow draft, exceptional maneuverability, and enhanced fuel efficiency, provides an unparalleled operational solution. Kevin Kirby, President and Regional Director of Marine Jet Power Americas, emphasized the advantages of waterjets in addressing specific operational challenges faced by Chatham Area Transit, such as frequent docking and varying currents.

Derecktor Shipyards, a leader in commercial hybrid vessel construction in the U.S., built these state-of-the-art ferries. With four vessels launched since 2014, the shipyard’s dedication to sustainable solutions and innovative marine construction is evident in this project. Erik Derecktor, New Construction Commercial Manager for Derecktor Shipyards, expressed pride in partnering with MJP and Chatham Area Transit on this groundbreaking project. The ferries are currently en route to Savannah, GA, where they will begin daily passenger service in the coming weeks.
