US-based maritime and logistics solutions provider Crowley is set to introduce an integrated ocean and rail service linking Mexico, the US Midwest, and Canada.

With Crowley’s new Mexico-US ocean route in the Gulf, the service will use the inland rail network of the Canadian National Railway Company and its US Railroad (CN) subsidiaries. The companies’ combined network provides broad reach across the Midwest and Canada to expand solutions for global clients in the North American markets.

“Through this collaboration with Canadian National, Crowley has further expanded market reach for our customers and the communities they serve with the fast and reliable transportation of goods throughout North America,” said Brett Bennett, senior vice president and general manager of Crowley Logistics.

In addition to a new ocean shipping route from Tuxpan, Mexico to Mobile, Alabama that avoids domestic traffic congestion at the US-Mexico border, Mobile’s connection to CN rail service to the Midwest and Canada offers customers the fastest, the most environmentally friendly transit times compared to emissions from trucks, with five to six times less fuel consumption per tonne transported.

Vessels sailing back and forth between Tuxpan, Mexico, and Mobile weekly in September will carry up to 1,000 teu in containers and more than 200 reefer containers.

After transiting Crowley’s ship from Mexico to the Port of Mobile, the containers are loaded onto daily CN trains that travel through the Midwest to Canada, connecting the US cities of Mobile and Chicago; Detroit; Minneapolis; Memphis; and Canadian cities like Toronto and Montreal.

“We are delighted to connect Crowley to our extensive inland rail network for this innovative service. We share similar values in providing solutions to complex supply chain needs and are excited to support their first venture through the Port of Mobile to the US and Canada,” said Doug MacDonald, Chief Marketing Officer at CN.
