Auckland’s public transport network has reached a significant milestone with the launch of its first plug-in hybrid electric fast ferry, set to operate on the busy Auckland to Devonport route. The vessel, which achieved a top speed of 36 knots in all-electric mode during sea trials, is designed by Incat Crowther and built by Q-West Boat Builders, featuring advanced electric propulsion systems.
This 32-meter ferry can carry up to 299 passengers and 20 bicycles at speeds of up to 28 knots. Its drivetrain includes four Danfoss electric motors and Hamilton water jets, equipped with liquid cooling systems and fire suppression features. The design minimizes electromagnetic interference and allows for weight control throughout construction.
Additionally, the ferry incorporates range-extending generators that work alongside its battery bank, promoting electrification and reducing emissions. Future upgrades for hydrogen fuel operation are also planned, aligning with Auckland Transport’s goal to modernize and decarbonize its fleet. The new vessel is expected to cut carbon emissions by 750,000 kg annually, marking a significant step toward sustainable public transport in the city.
