The expedition cruise ship Coral Adventurer experienced a grounding incident off Papua New Guinea during its first voyage since a controversial passenger death two months prior. The ship ran aground on a reef near Dreghafen Point, approximately 15 nautical miles from Lae, with strong currents likely contributing to the mishap, as reported by Travel and Tour World.
All 80 passengers and 43 crew members aboard are safe, and there have been no reports of flooding or pollution. A response officer from the Papua New Guinea government has boarded the vessel to assist with the situation, according to Sky News. As of early Monday, the ship remained in position, based on AIS data from Pole Star Global.
Built in 2019, the Coral Adventurer accommodates up to 120 passengers. It embarked on a Christmas cruise from Cairns on December 18, with planned stops at Ferguson Island and Trobriand Island, ultimately heading to Madang before returning to Cairns on January 11.
This incident follows an investigation launched by Australian authorities after the death of a woman during a shore excursion from the ship in October. The CEO of the operating company expressed condolences and support for the woman’s family while investigations continue.
