On February 26, 2025, the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Brilliance of the Seas, rescued 11 refugees stranded in the Gulf of Mexico during a cruise from New Orleans. The refugees were found adrift on a small, overcrowded boat between Cuba and Mexico, signaling for help with a white flag after being stranded for one to two days. The ship’s crew spotted the distressed vessel while sailing between Grand Cayman and Cozumel and promptly launched a rescue operation.
Captain and crew members utilized a pilot boat to transport the refugees in groups, providing life jackets and essential care. Once onboard, the refugees received food, water, and medical assistance, as many appeared exhausted and dehydrated. Passengers aboard the cruise, organized by the LGBTQ+ vacation company VACAYA, witnessed the rescue, with some contributing donations for the refugees.
Following the rescue, the cruise ship coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican authorities, leading to the decision that the refugees would disembark in Mexico when the ship reached its port. VACAYA’s CEO, Randle Roper, who was present during the incident, emphasized the importance of the rescue in the company’s history. Official statements from Royal Caribbean and the U.S. Coast Guard are anticipated.
