A crew member from the Sun Princess is missing after reportedly going overboard while the ship was en route to Istanbul, Turkey. The incident occurred on Wednesday as the vessel navigated the Dardanelles Strait following a stop in Chania, Greece. Captain Craig Street confirmed the “deeply saddening” news in a letter to passengers, noting that the crew member’s fall was verified through CCTV footage.
Emergency procedures were activated immediately, and a coordinated search with maritime authorities commenced. Despite several hours of searching, the crew member has not yet been located, and Princess Cruises has not disclosed their identity. The cruise line’s assistance team is supporting the family during this challenging time.
Due to the ongoing search, the Sun Princess has altered its itinerary, canceling its scheduled visit to Mykonos and delaying its arrival in Istanbul. Passengers were informed that the ship is now expected in Istanbul at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 22. As a gesture of support, Princess Cruises will automatically refund pre-booked shore excursions for the canceled port call. The cruise line has also offered access to counselors for passengers affected by the incident.
