A 32-year-old Filipino crew member, Jeric Bueno, was found dead five days after going missing from the MSC Poesia cruise ship, as confirmed by the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). Bueno, who worked as a waiter, disappeared shortly after the ship left Montevideo, Uruguay, bound for Brazil on February 22. Surveillance footage indicated that he fell overboard from Deck 7 around the life raft station, leading to a search operation coordinated by the Uruguayan Navy and later Brazilian authorities.
Tragically, the search concluded on February 27 with the recovery of Bueno’s remains. The DMW is now focused on providing psychological and financial support to his family while the manning agency responsible for his deployment has been instructed to cover repatriation expenses. Local investigators are reviewing all evidence to determine whether Bueno’s fall was an accident or foul play.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of Filipino seafarers in the maritime industry. Advocacy groups are calling for improved safety measures to ensure the well-being of these workers at sea. The outcome of the investigation will be monitored closely, as it may prompt changes in safety protocols within the industry.
