A tragic incident took place on December 27, 2025, when a fire erupted in the engine room of the tourist ship ‘Atlantic Cruise,’ resulting in the death of a crew member. The vessel was en route from Cox’s Bazar to Saint Martin’s Island when the blaze ignited just before around 200 tourists were set to board, allowing them to escape what could have been a devastating situation.
The crew member, 35-year-old Nur Kamal, had just completed his night shift and was resting in his cabin when the flames engulfed the ship at approximately 7:00 AM while it was docking at Nuniachhara jetty. Local Fire Service and Coast Guard teams responded swiftly to extinguish the fire but unfortunately discovered Kamal’s body inside his cabin, where he had been asleep at the time of the incident.
Hossain Islam Bahadur, general secretary of the Sea Cruise Owners Association, confirmed that the remaining tourists were safely transported to Saint Martin’s Island via a different boat. Those who did not travel are scheduled to depart on Sunday. Meanwhile, officer Mohammad Ismail indicated that an electrical short circuit might have triggered this unfortunate event.
