Goa’s tourism sector is set to receive a significant boost with the selection of the Chapora and Sal rivers for the Cruise Bharat Mission, a central initiative aimed at enhancing cruise tourism in India. Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonawal, announced in the Rajya Sabha that cruise circuits on the Chapora River will operate from Chapora to Alorna Fort, a historical site located 30 km from Mapusa, known for its 17th-century architecture.

The Sal River cruise will cover the route from Cavelossim to Betul Fort and Betul Lighthouse, which highlights Goa’s maritime heritage. The Union Ports Ministry plans to operationalize 51 river cruise circuits across 13 states and three Union territories, expanding on the 15 circuits currently in operation.

Launched on September 30, 2024, from Mumbai, the Cruise Bharat Mission aims to double passenger traffic by 2029. While Goa currently offers day trips on the Mandovi River, these new circuits promise longer excursions that showcase the state’s cultural heritage. Additionally, a new cruise terminal at Mormugao Port is part of this initiative, which handled over 67,000 cruise passengers in 2024-25, generating significant revenue.
