Kenya, 14 January 2026 – The country is witnessing a notable increase in cruise tourism, largely attributed to the introduction of a new multiple-entry Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for cruise passengers. This streamlined process facilitates easier access for international visitors, promoting repeat visits and enhancing Kenya’s reputation as a prime maritime destination.
Recently, the Port of Mombasa welcomed over 2,000 international tourists aboard two luxury cruise ships, the MV Azamara Journey and EUROPA Valletta, which docked on Monday and Tuesday. This influx underscores a significant trend in cruise tourism, with government reports indicating a 140 percent growth by the end of 2024, generating economic benefits for coastal communities.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano highlighted the pivotal role of the ETA system in this expansion. She stated, “By simplifying entry for cruise passengers, we are making Kenya more accessible and attractive to visitors from around the world,” emphasizing the positive impact on tourism and local economies.
On Tuesday, the luxury cruise liner MS Europa also made its third call of the year at the Port of Mombasa, arriving from Zanzibar with 286 passengers on board, further illustrating the growing allure of Kenya as a cruise destination.
