The cruise industry is rapidly expanding with MSC Cruises ordering two additional mega cruise ships from Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France. These new vessels, part of the World Class, will each weigh 217,000 gross tons and accommodate over 6,700 passengers, with deliveries scheduled for 2029 and 2030. This order represents an investment of nearly €3.5 billion ($3.93 billion) and is expected to generate over 20 million work hours.
MSC has significantly contributed to the cruise sector, supporting €5.6 billion ($6.3 billion) in investments for its recently delivered ships, including the MSC World America and the upcoming MSC World Asia and MSC World Atlantic. Currently, there are 69 cruise ships on order globally, valued at over $55 billion. Other cruise lines, such as Carnival and Norwegian, are also expanding their fleets with larger vessels.
Construction for MSC’s new ships will start in 2027, coinciding with the delivery of MSC World Atlantic, which will operate Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral. MSC has invested approximately €18 billion ($20 billion) over 25 years in building 19 ships in France, focusing on energy efficiency with LNG-fueled engines and advanced waste management systems.
MSC has evolved from a small operator to a major player in the cruise industry since its entry 37 years ago. In addition to its contemporary cruise segment, MSC has launched the ultra-luxury brand Explora Journeys and is involved in commercial shipping, including ferries and containerships.
