A coalition of seven councils and two major tourism organizations from Jäger and Central Coast has convened for the first time under a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at enhancing opportunities for local businesses in New South Wales’ cruise industry. The meeting marks the beginning of a three-year partnership led by the Port Authority of NSW, involving the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock, Port Stephens, and Maitland councils, along with the Central Coast and Destination Sydney North Newcastle.
A key outcome of this agreement is the creation of a part-time cruise coordinator position, which will work to expand travel routes for cruise lines, enabling passengers to explore the vibrant Hunter and Central Coast regions. John McKenna, CEO of the Port Authority of NSW, emphasized that this initiative is focused on showcasing regional highlights, from the natural beauty of the Central Coast to Hunter Valley’s renowned wineries.
The General Manager of Cruise, Martin Bidgood, highlighted this agreement as a significant milestone for long-term regional tourism growth. By uniting local councils and tourism leaders, the partnership aims to establish a foundation for cruise industry expansion along the Maritime Gateway, positioning it as a model for collaborative regional development.
