The RMS St. Helena, a unique vessel known for its loyal following, served as a vital link to the remote island of Saint Helena until its retirement in 2018. Originally commissioned in 1990, the ship was essential for transporting cargo and passengers to the island, which lacked an airport. Following its retirement, St. Helena briefly served various roles, including a supply ship and an armory, before being renovated for a new purpose in the expedition cruise market.

In 2024, Terra Nova Expeditions announced plans to repurpose St. Helena as an expedition cruise ship, highlighting her ice-strengthened hull and cargo-handling capabilities. Greg Carter, the company’s founder, emphasized the ship’s historical significance and character, aligning with Terra Nova’s mission of meaningful exploration. The ship’s extensive renovations in 2022 modernized her facilities while retaining her storied charm.

Scheduled to launch in December 2026, St. Helena will offer 10-day cruises from Ushuaia, Argentina, to the Antarctic Peninsula, accommodating just 98 passengers. The expedition will feature activities like overnight camping on the continent, kayaking, and snowshoeing, along with 12 Zodiacs for close-up explorations, blending traditional maritime heritage with contemporary adventure.
