The Indian Institute of Management Visakhapatnam recently hosted the fifth national workshop of Ocean Centres India, a long-term initiative under the United Nations Global Compact, supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The program, themed “Stepping Stone Towards a Safe and Sustainable Ocean Economy in India,” aims to enhance safety within the ocean economy, involving partners such as the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Directorate General of Shipping.
The workshop featured prominent policymakers and industry leaders, including Dr. Ravi Raj Atrey, who highlighted ongoing closed-group multi-stakeholder discussions across key maritime hubs such as Kochi, Mumbai, and Chennai. Uma Sudhindra, a board member at IIM Visakhapatnam, emphasized the ocean’s crucial role in energy, food, technology, and trade, calling for advancements in maritime cybersecurity through dedicated frameworks and regional cooperation.
Capt. V Pardhasaradhi discussed India’s proactive measures in green shipping and sustainable practices, including the national green shipping policy. The workshop also included panel discussions on port security and gaps in blue finance, aiming to translate stakeholder insights into actionable steps for enhancing safety and sustainability in India’s ocean economy.
