The development of hybrid and electric propulsion tugs in India signifies not only a technological advancement but also the country’s increasing capability to lead the global green maritime movement. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized this point after unveiling advanced machinery at Cochin Shipyard to enhance the country’s shipbuilding capacity. The minister highlighted that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and marks a significant step towards achieving it.

Cochin Shipyard recently inaugurated the ‘ProArc CNC Plasma Cum Oxy Fuel Plate Cutting Machine,’ a state-of-the-art facility that will greatly enhance the ship-building capabilities of the company. This new system allows for real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and increased production efficiency, in line with the objectives of the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy (SBFAP) 2.0. Sonowal mentioned that the introduction of Industry 4.0-ready facilities and the Green Tug Transition Programme represents a transformative leap in India’s shipbuilding and green maritime journey.

Under the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), Cochin Shipyard is constructing hybrid and electric propulsion tugs in collaboration with global experts. The project, which involves the development of 16 vessels across major ports in India, signifies a significant milestone in the country’s green maritime transition. Sonowal also acknowledged Cochin Shipyard’s contributions to India’s maritime sector, from building iconic vessels to shaping a skilled maritime workforce for the future. Additionally, the minister reviewed the progress of constructing India’s largest Trailer Suction Hopper Dredger, which will enhance coastal access and maritime infrastructure while reducing dependency on foreign services.
