On World Maritime Day, former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik emphasized the importance of sustainable shipping while celebrating Odisha’s rich maritime heritage. He noted that seaborne trade significantly contributes to the global economy, urging collective efforts to promote eco-friendly practices within the shipping industry. Patnaik highlighted Odisha’s historical role as a maritime hub, where Kalinga served as a vital link to the eastern seas, facilitating trade and prosperity for centuries.
In a related development, the Union Cabinet has approved a substantial ₹69,725 crore package aimed at revitalizing India’s shipbuilding and maritime sector. Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that this initiative aligns with India’s ambition for global leadership in trade and commerce while generating significant employment opportunities for the youth. He described the package as a pivotal moment for the maritime industry, reinforcing the government’s commitment to enhancing the sector’s capabilities.
Additionally, Patnaik commended the successful test of the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime missile, which was launched from a rail-based mobile launcher system. He congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Strategic Forces Command for this achievement, which positions India among a select group of nations possessing such advanced capabilities. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also praised the successful launch, noting the missile’s range of up to 2,000 km and its advanced features.
