Allcargo Group, a global logistics conglomerate based in India, recently completed a rainwater harvesting, storage, and groundwater recharge project in Sawangi Tehsil, Nagpur. The project aims to address water scarcity in the region, particularly in the Vidarbha area of Maharashtra, and boost agricultural activities and the rural economy. This initiative, carried out by Allcargo Group’s CSR arm, Avashya Foundation, is part of the company’s efforts to drive holistic transformation by increasing access to water in water-starved areas.
Implemented in collaboration with Sadbhavana Gramin Vikas Sanstha and Purti Sinchan Samruddhi Kalyankari Sanstha, the Sawangi Canal Project involved widening and deepening a 4.11 km ridge-to-valley length of the Canal. This expansion aims to enhance irrigation, improve groundwater levels, and support farmers, livestock, and wildlife. By following the Tamaswada pattern of water conservation, the project focused on desilting and restoring the Canal to ensure optimal water storage and prevent soil erosion.
The Sawangi Canal Project successfully created 100,000 cubic meters of surface water storage and contributed 225,000 cubic meters of groundwater annually. This endeavor enriched 400 hectares of agricultural land, benefiting 200 families by providing drinking water, water for cattle, and protective irrigation for crops. In total, the project is expected to support the agricultural activities of over 1200 farmers and indirectly benefit over 3000 farmers and their families. Allcargo Group’s Founder and Chairman, Shashi Kiran Shetty, expressed satisfaction with the project’s impact and highlighted the importance of addressing water scarcity in rural regions to boost economic growth.
