The Andhra Pradesh state cabinet is currently reviewing plans for a captive port in the Anakapalle district, with the goal of boosting economic growth and improving logistics operations. Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, a member of Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s cabinet, shared this announcement through the X platform.

In a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, AM/NS India is set to establish a captive port in Anakapalle, in line with the state’s focus on economic development and logistical efficiency. This initiative is accompanied by plans for an integrated steel plant with a production capacity of 24 million metric tonnes per year and an investment of ₹1.47 lakh crore. The port project will include 17 berths, developed in two phases with an investment of ₹11,198 crore, and aims to handle 20.5 MMPTA in the initial phase, creating around 8,000 jobs.

Officials have strategically chosen Nakkapalle as the location for the steel plant due to its proximity to the coast, NH-16, the Chennai Grand Trunk rail link, and access to water from the Polavaram Left Main Canal. The first phase of the plant will produce 7.3 million metric tonnes of stainless steel annually, with provisions for future expansion to reach full capacity. This development underscores the potential of the steel sector in generating employment, ranking second only to the textile industry in the region. The news of ArcelorMittal’s establishment of a captive port at Anakapalle was first reported on Maritime Gateway, South Asia’s premier shipping and logistics news portal.
