Argentina has substantially increased its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports to India, doubling the shipment volumes to fill the supply void caused by disruptions in West Asian energy routes, particularly due to the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. Indian importers have rapidly sought Argentine LPG, capitalizing on Argentina’s enhanced export capacity and favorable pricing to compensate for reductions from traditional suppliers such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar.

Typically, India sources most of its LPG from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations and the U.S. However, the Hormuz disruption has accelerated India’s diversification of LPG sources, with Argentina emerging as a vital supplier, fortified by its Vaca Muerta shale production. Argentine LPG shipments take approximately 30–35 days to reach Indian ports, necessitating meticulous planning but successfully mitigating potential domestic shortages.

In other developments, Indian sugar mills have re-entered the global market, exporting around 100,000 metric tonnes as the rupee’s depreciation and rising global sugar prices enhance export viability. Meanwhile, Mumbai is pursuing long-term methanol supply partnerships to support a transition towards cleaner marine fuels, reflecting a significant movement toward sustainability in India’s shipping sector.
