The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has charged Tata Consulting Engineers, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, along with others, including multinational firm Boskalis Smit, with corruption and deception amounting to around Rs 800 crore linked to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai. The CBI alleges that Tata Consulting Engineers conspired with Mumbai port officials to favor certain private firms for dredging work.
Tata Consulting Engineers served as the management consultant for the dredging project, which was executed in two phases: Phase I from 2010 to 2014 and Phase II from 2012 to 2019. The case against the Tata Group is significant, coming just a week after an Air India Dreamliner, purchased from the government by the Group, crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in 241 fatalities.
The allegations raise critical questions about corporate governance and accountability in major infrastructure projects. The developments are being closely monitored, given the impact on both the Tata Group’s reputation and the broader maritime engineering sector in India.
This incident marks a notable escalation in ongoing scrutiny of corporate practices within key industries.
