Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has begun construction of a hybrid Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for UK-based North Star Shipping, a noteworthy advancement in the offshore renewable energy sector. The keel-laying ceremony was led by James Bradford, Chief Technology Officer at North Star Shipping, and attended by senior CSL management, including Director of Finance Jose V J.
The 68-meter hybrid-electric SOV, designed in collaboration with Norway’s VARD AS, is the first of two vessels CSL is building for North Star. Certified by DNV, it will feature a hybrid electric system powered by lithium-ion batteries, electric cycloidal propulsion for easy maneuverability, and a walk-to-work gangway for safe personnel transfers at sea.
Tailored for offshore wind operations, the vessel will accommodate 54 personnel, including technicians and crew, and will house dedicated facilities for servicing wind turbines. This design aims to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in offshore activities.
Upon delivery, the advanced SOV is anticipated to significantly bolster renewable energy initiatives in the UK and beyond, reinforcing CSL’s global shipbuilding reputation and North Star Shipping’s dedication to environmentally friendly maritime solutions.
