Polestar Maritime Limited has placed an order for two 60-ton Bollard Pull Battery-Electric Green Tugs from Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). These vessels are intended to operate at Jawaharlal Nehru Port as part of India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), aimed at enhancing sustainability in maritime operations.

The design and construction of the tugs will adhere to specifications set by Robert Allan Limited, following the Approved Standard Tug Design and Specifications (ASTDS). CSL, alongside its subsidiary Udupi-CSL, will be responsible for building the tugs at their facility in Cochin, ensuring high-quality standards throughout the process.

A key feature of these tugs is their battery-electric propulsion system, which guarantees zero direct emissions during harbor operations. The batteries will be procured domestically, aligning with the “Make in India” initiative and bolstering local manufacturing efforts.

With this latest order, CSL’s current project portfolio now includes a total of 17 tugs, alongside 6 green tugs under construction. CSL’s Chairman, Madhu S Nair, reiterated the company’s dedication to revolutionizing India’s maritime sector through the deployment of battery-electric tugs as part of the GTTP initiative.
