Mumbai Celebrates 75th Anniversary of Directorate General Shipping
The Directorate General Shipping (DGS), part of India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, marked its 75th anniversary with a significant conference focused on maritime security, themed "Jalasya Rakṣā, Janasya Surakṣā: Ocean Sentinel in the 21st Century." This flagship event, the first in a series planned for the year, convened key maritime leaders, policymakers, and legal experts from across the globe.
During the celebrations, DGS formalized international cooperation by signing two important memorandums of understanding. One was with the International Group of P&I Clubs, represented by CEO Nick Shaw, and the other with the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network, represented by Chirag Bahri. These agreements aim to enhance maritime safety and promote seafarer well-being.
The conference featured esteemed speakers, including Capt. Si Abul Kalam Azad and keynotes from government officials, highlighting India’s leadership in global maritime governance. Sessions addressed various maritime security challenges, emphasizing collaboration and risk management.
Closing remarks celebrated the foundational partnerships established to ensure the safety and security of seafarers and oceans for future generations, culminating in a networking event to further these discussions.
