Kolkata recently hosted a prominent Symposium on Seafarers’ Recruitment and Welfare, organized by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The event convened essential stakeholders from the maritime industry, including Recruitment and Placement Services License (RPSL) holders, industry representatives, and senior officials. The discussions aimed at enhancing India’s maritime manpower ecosystem.
Shri Sushil Mansing Khopde, IPS and Additional Director General of Shipping, addressed attendees with insights on the challenges RPSL holders face in the ever-evolving global maritime landscape. He emphasized the importance of regulatory compliance, transparency in recruitment practices, and the protection of seafarer rights. The session also raised concerns regarding adherence to compliance standards and the need to eliminate fraudulent recruitment activities.
Khopde stressed the necessity for ethical recruitment aligned with international standards to protect the welfare of Indian seafarers. He emphasized improved collaboration between regulators, RPSL agencies, and stakeholders to enhance monitoring and enforcement. Digital oversight and data-driven approaches were highlighted as essential tools for accountability and service improvement.
The symposium also explored capacity-building initiatives aimed at equipping RPSL holders with current regulatory knowledge and technological resources. The discussions laid out a roadmap that aims to bolster India’s maritime workforce while enhancing the global reputation of its recruitment systems, reaffirming the Directorate General of Shipping’s commitment to ethical practices in seafarer recruitment.
