The Goa government announced plans to establish a maritime board aimed at enhancing collaboration between the industry and government while streamlining maritime policies. During a conference hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) focused on India’s shipbuilding vision for 2047, State River Navigation Department Minister Subhash Phal Desai emphasized the importance of this new institution. He stated that the Goa Maritime Board would play a crucial role in coordinating and accelerating shipbuilding and maritime activities within the state.
The board’s objectives include promoting maritime tourism, developing coastal infrastructure, and supporting traditional fishing communities. Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shantanu Thakur, participated in the session virtually, while various industry leaders, including CII Goa State Council chairman Arjun Chowgule, were present.
Phal Desai expressed a vision for maritime development that encompasses not only large industries but also small enterprises and local communities. He highlighted the importance of making Goa a preferred destination for young Indians considering maritime careers. Additionally, he underscored the state government’s commitment to environmental protection, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices in maritime development.
With global shipping facing increasing pressure to minimize its carbon footprint due to stringent emission regulations, Phal Desai noted that Goa would prioritize green shipbuilding practices, including zero-waste manufacturing processes in shipyards.
