Highlighting Green Initiatives Ahead of India Maritime Week Celebrations

Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority in Thoothukudi, recently addressed the media in Madurai regarding the India Maritime Week 2025 celebration. He emphasized the port’s achievements, completed projects, ongoing initiatives, and future plans, including significant green initiatives aimed at sustainability.

During the media briefing, Purohit announced that the India Maritime Week, scheduled for October 27 to 31 in Mumbai, will cover topics such as green shipping, digitization, the blue economy, maritime heritage, and maritime corridors. He highlighted various completed projects at the port, including the link conveyor from coal jetty-I to the coal stack yard and the conversion of Berth 9 into a container terminal.

Ongoing projects include the construction of Berth-10 for multi-cargo, a four-lane road to the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station, and the establishment of a Maritime Heritage Museum. Upcoming projects, such as the outer harbour development, were also discussed.

Purohit underscored the port’s commitment to environmental sustainability, mentioning the commissioning of a Green Hydrogen Pilot Project to power streetlights and electric vehicle charging stations. Future green initiatives will include a 6 MW wind farm and facilities for green methanol bunkering and production. Deputy Chairperson Rajesh Soundararajan was also present at the event.
