India has signed 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Maldives, committing MVR 100 million to enhance ferry services and improve maritime connectivity. The agreements, part of the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) Phase III, were formalized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marking a significant step in the growing partnership between the two nations.
The projects aim to uplift community livelihoods and address local needs through improved infrastructure. Abdulla Khaleel, the Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that India’s assistance aligns with the Maldivian people’s needs, reflecting the strong bond between the countries. He noted that these initiatives are crucial for creating socio-economic opportunities and enhancing community resilience.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, highlighted the rapid development of a nationwide high-speed ferry network, which currently connects 81 islands across nine atolls. The new MoUs are expected to further expand these services, with project completion anticipated by the end of this year, ahead of the initial 2027 timeline.
Both ministers expressed gratitude for India’s support, underscoring its transformative impact on Maldivian communities and reinforcing the spirit of cooperation that defines Maldives-India relations.
