The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) has introduced a series of initiatives to modernize India’s maritime infrastructure, enhance its global trade presence, and promote sustainability. One such initiative is the ‘One Nation: One Port Process (ONOP)’, which aims to standardize and streamline operations across India’s major ports. This initiative seeks to eliminate inconsistencies in documentation and processes that have previously caused inefficiencies, increased costs, and operational delays.
During a stakeholders’ meeting to discuss possibilities from the major announcements made in the Union Budget 2025-26 for the maritime sector, Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched these initiatives. Along with ONOP, Sonowal also introduced Sagar Ankalan—the Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) for 2023-24. This index is a significant step towards improving efficiency and global competitiveness in India’s maritime sector.
In addition, Sonowal announced the launch of the Bharat Global Ports Consortium, aimed at strengthening global trade by expanding India’s maritime reach. These initiatives mark a proactive approach by the government to revamp the country’s maritime sector, positioning it for growth and sustainability in the global trade landscape. The announcement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and innovation in achieving these goals.
