On August 25, 2025, the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) celebrated its 75th anniversary with a Knowledge Sharing Conference in Mumbai. The event featured officials, maritime experts, and industry leaders discussing the future of maritime training, safety, and sustainability under the theme “India Navigating Through T³: Training, Transition, Transformation.”
Dr. Malini V. Shankar, Vice Chancellor of the Indian Maritime University, highlighted the significance of maritime education, particularly in promoting the inclusion of women seafarers. The conference launched crucial reports, including updates on global training standards and ship inspection processes.
Shyam Jagannathan, Director General of Shipping, advocated for an innovation-driven strategy to enhance India’s global maritime position, emphasizing world-class training and technology. He clarified that foreign seafarer certifications would be recognized after validation by DG Shipping for transparency.
Additionally, DG Shipping has imposed regulations preventing unaccredited institutions from issuing certifications. The introduction of a Learning Management System (LMS) aims to standardize maritime training, ensuring compliance with international regulations. Jagannathan also addressed climate challenges, reaffirming India’s commitment to sustainability in maritime operations.
