Zelim, a maritime safety technology firm, is urging global regulators to adopt enhanced maritime safety measures following India’s recent mandate for Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) on ships visiting Indian ports. This initiative requires both domestic and international vessels of 500 gross tons or more to install CCTV by February 2028, marking a significant advancement in maritime security. The move aims to improve incident response, assist search and rescue operations, and deter criminal activities, addressing growing concerns over crew and ship safety.

India’s Directorate General of Shipping implemented this regulation after a series of incidents highlighted the need for better situational awareness onboard. The government noted that the lack of real-time monitoring often delayed emergency responses, increasing the risk of fatalities. Zelim’s CEO, Sam Mayall, emphasized that India’s decision sets a precedent for other nations, advocating for the integration of AI-powered monitoring systems to further enhance safety protocols.

Zelim is actively collaborating with Indian authorities to provide technical support for compliance with the new regulations. The company’s advanced AI camera technology not only helps in real-time accident prevention but also offers valuable data for investigations. As the maritime industry lags behind aviation in adopting safety technologies, Zelim calls for a unified global standard to improve seafarer welfare and ship safety.
