India has inaugurated its first domestically developed Drive-Through Cargo Scanner (ICS) at Jawaharlal Nehru Custom House (JNCH) in Nhava Sheva, a significant milestone in promoting self-reliance and enhancing trade security under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Developed collaboratively by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and JNCH, the project was officially launched during a ceremony attended by key officials, including CBIC Member (Customs) Yogendra Garg and BARC Director Martin Mascarenhas.

Garg emphasized that the ICS represents not just technological advancement but a commitment to a more secure and self-reliant India. The scanner employs dual-energy X-ray technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML), enabling it to process 60 to 80 containers per hour, which is four times the capacity of existing equipment.

The integration of the ICS with the CBIC’s Risk Management System (RMS), AI/ML tools, and optical character recognition (OCR) is expected to streamline operations, reduce costs, and bolster anti-smuggling efforts. BARC’s contribution highlights India’s capability to produce world-class security technologies. Anticipated benefits include a 50% reduction in operational costs and decreased manpower requirements through automated threat detection.

Officials indicated that this initiative will serve as a foundation for the Make in India and Ease of Doing Business campaigns, with plans to deploy similar scanners at major ports by 2047, aligning with the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
