India’s inaugural Maritime Simulation Centre was launched on Friday at AMET Knowledge Park, located near Chennai, by Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. This state-of-the-art facility is a collaboration between the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET), a deemed university, and A.P. Moller-Maersk from Denmark. The establishment of the centre involved an investment of ₹13.5 crore, which includes ₹6.5 crore contributed by the A.P. Moller Foundation, further enhancing the 25-year partnership between AMET and Maersk.
The centre is equipped with Full Mission Simulators for both Deck and Engine operations, as well as advanced Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems. Additionally, it features Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) laboratories designed to provide cadets with immersive, hands-on training in essential maritime skills. These include watchkeeping, steering, collision avoidance, navigation light identification, and engine troubleshooting.
By simulating realistic maritime scenarios, the centre allows cadets to refine their skills in a controlled academic environment, significantly preparing them for actual sea operations. Students will gain valuable practical experience and a deeper understanding of modern maritime challenges, adhering to global industry standards.
Nynne Norman Scheuer, Senior Director at Maersk, noted that the facility aims to bridge the gap between academic education and real-world application, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to tackle the complexities of contemporary shipping.
