Pune-based SOPAN Group, in partnership with V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA), has broken ground on India’s first green methanol bunkering and refuelling facility at VOC Port. The project was inaugurated by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, marking a significant step in India’s clean energy transition and sustainable port development.
The pilot-scale initiative will create a 750 m³ green methanol storage and bunkering terminal with complete plant infrastructure. Executed by SOPAN as the EPC contractor, the project supports the Government of India’s Net Zero 2070 vision and aligns with the Maritime India Vision 2030 roadmap to decarbonise the maritime sector.
“The Government of India has set a vision for India to achieve Net Zero by 2070. VOC Port, in line with this vision, is advancing its Green Port mission and has successfully completed a pilot green hydrogen project,” said VOCPA Chairperson Susanta Purohit. “We are establishing India’s first Green Methanol Bunkering & Refuelling facility and are pleased to partner with SOPAN, an experienced player in the green energy ecosystem.”
“Today, SOPAN is laying the foundation for India’s green maritime future,” added Aniruddha Kadvekar, Director, SOPAN. “By establishing a dedicated Green Methanol Bunkering Hub at VOC Port, we can enable up to 95% CO2 emission reductions for ships and strengthen India’s role in the global alternative fuel market.”
