India has been re-elected to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council, securing the highest number of votes in its category during the Assembly elections held in London for the 2025-26 biennium. This election places India in Category B, which comprises ten nations with significant interests in international seaborne trade, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates.

Following the election, the Indian High Commission in London announced that India received 154 votes, expressing gratitude to its partners for their trust. The IMO serves as the leading authority overseeing global maritime activities, which are essential for international trade and transport. The Council functions as the executive body of the IMO, responsible for supervising the organization’s work under the Assembly’s guidance.

The newly elected Council is scheduled to convene for its 136th session on December 4, during which it will elect its Chair and Vice-Chair for the upcoming biennium. Earlier this year, India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways launched its campaign for re-election, highlighting plans to invest USD 1 trillion in the maritime sector over the next 25 years, aiming to position India as a leading maritime nation.
