India has discreetly initiated ‘Operation Urja Suraksha’ to ensure the safety of its merchant vessels carrying vital energy supplies from the Persian Gulf. This operation represents a shift from previous diplomatic efforts and naval escort missions to a targeted extraction plan for 22 Indian-flagged vessels, crucially loaded with LNG, LPG, and crude oil. Coordination with Iranian authorities aims to facilitate safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Recently, the VLGC Jag Vasant successfully docked at Kandla Port with 42,000 metric tonnes of LPG, alleviating pressures on India’s LPG distribution amid a significant reduction in import volumes. The vessel took an unconventional route via the Qeshm-Larak channel, signaling its identity to Iranian naval forces to ensure safe transit, marking an early success for the operation.

Amidst this operation, reports from trapped Indian seafarers reveal a harrowing situation; one sailor detailed the constant fear aboard his vessel, which has faced missile strikes nearby. This personal account highlights the human toll of the ongoing crisis, often overshadowed by discussions of supply chains.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials assured that shipping from “friendly nations” will be permitted through Hormuz, while allegations from the Gulf Cooperation Council suggest Iran may be imposing transit fees—claims Iranian authorities deny, adding complexity to the situation.
