The Indian Government has renewed financial support for the passenger ferry service between Nagapattinam, India, and Kankesanthurai, Sri Lanka, for another year. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and fostering closer ties with Sri Lanka.

Under the Viability Gap Funding mechanism, the Indian Government will allocate over 300 million Sri Lankan Rupees annually. This funding ensures affordable fares and uninterrupted service by covering essential logistical and operational costs. Since its relaunch in August 2024, the ferry has served over 15,000 passengers, facilitating cultural, economic, and social exchanges between the two nations.

This decision follows significant bilateral discussions, including visits by the Sri Lankan President to India in December 2024 and the Indian Prime Minister to Sri Lanka in April 2025. Additionally, plans are being considered to explore new ferry routes and enhance maritime collaboration further.
