Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal discussed the potential for ship-building in India and emphasized the government’s efforts to promote the sector during the 12th Biennial International Conference on Ports, Shipping & Logistics 2025. Goyal highlighted the need for suggestions on making vessel flagging in India more appealing, as the country currently lacks enough flagged vessels to take advantage of existing regulations.

Additionally, Goyal mentioned India’s progress in doubling its port capacity and reducing ship turnaround times over the past decade. He emphasized the importance of further strengthening the logistics ecosystem, considering that 95% of India’s trade volume passes through ports and the country’s extensive coastline supports trade activities. Goyal underscored the sector’s potential for significant growth in the coming years.

The Minister also addressed the need for a more efficient and integrated logistics system at ports, mentioning the introduction of the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) to streamline logistics operations. Goyal called for innovative ideas to enhance container ownership, container manufacturing, export speed, and congestion management. He stressed the importance of training seafarers to meet the sector’s increasing demand and highlighted the maritime trade and logistics industry as crucial for India’s development and global contributions.
