The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), a prominent ship classification society, has applauded the Indian Coast Guard and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the successful launch of two vessels: the Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) ICGS Samudra Prachet and the Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ICGS Atal. This achievement underscores India’s commitment to maritime security, environmental protection, and self-sufficiency in shipbuilding.
The ICGS Samudra Prachet, the second of two indigenous PCVs from GSL, is equipped to swiftly respond to marine pollution incidents, primarily oil spills, within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). IRS collaborated closely with GSL to ensure that the vessel adheres to rigorous safety, quality, and environmental standards.
Meanwhile, the ICGS Atal is the sixth of eight FPVs designed for the Coast Guard. This 52-meter, 320-tonne vessel, developed in-house by GSL and classified by IRS, is intended for diverse operations, including coastal patrol, anti-smuggling, and search and rescue missions.
These initiatives significantly contribute to the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign, enhancing India’s ability to construct specialized maritime assets. Additionally, the keel for the first of six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) for the Coast Guard has been laid, which will further strengthen maritime surveillance and pollution control capabilities.
