DFDS, the Danish operator set to take over Jersey’s ferry services, has launched a program called Waves of Talent to increase female representation in maritime roles typically dominated by men. With women currently only representing 2% of deck and engine positions in the industry, this initiative aims to address the gender imbalance. The program provides hands-on training aboard DFDS vessels for female students and has already seen success in Turkey and Morocco, where female representation in these positions has increased from 4.4% in 2023 to 6.6% by late 2024.

DFDS has set a goal to increase female representation in deck and engine departments to 20% within five years. The company hopes to inspire more young Jersey women to consider careers as seafarers. DFDS vice-president Gemma Griffin emphasized the need for change and the ambition to reach this target by 2030. The company aims to encourage the local maritime community to empower women and create inclusive opportunities, ultimately strengthening the industry both locally and globally.

This announcement comes ahead of International Women’s Day, which DFDS sees as an opportunity to celebrate progress and drive further action towards gender equality in maritime roles. The company’s focus on increasing female representation in traditionally male-dominated positions reflects a broader commitment to diversity and inclusion within the industry. By encouraging more women to pursue careers as seafarers, DFDS hopes to create a more balanced and representative workforce in the maritime sector.
