Kongsberg Maritime, based in Norway, has signed a contract to supply a comprehensive equipment package for India’s first electric tug at Deendayal Port in Kandla. This initiative is a significant milestone in India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP) and represents the world’s first full electrical tug integration, advancing maritime decarbonization efforts in the country.

The contract, awarded by Mandovi Drydocks in collaboration with Ripley Group, includes advanced technologies such as permanent magnet-driven azimuth thrusters, energy storage systems, and integrated automation and control systems. Designed by NavNautik India, the tug will have a bollard pull of 60 tons and is expected to be delivered by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Kongsberg Maritime’s Global Customer Support team will offer operational assistance, ensuring long-term value for the tug’s owner and the port operator. While the company has previously worked on hybrid e-tug projects, this marks its first full-electric tug contract.

The Deendayal Port Authority has expressed enthusiasm for this project, highlighting its importance in promoting green shipping and decarbonization in the maritime sector. Kandla, located in Gujarat, is a key port on India’s western coast, originally established in the 1950s.
