Netincon Marketing Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Kolkata’s Ripley Group, has won the tender for India’s first electric green tug, securing the lowest bid of ₹6,30,000 per day—5.97% below the state-owned Deendayal Port Authority’s reserve price of ₹6,70,000. To fulfill the tender requirements, Netincon has collaborated with Goa’s Mandovi Drydocks for the construction of the tug. The agreement entails hiring the electric tug for a 15-year period.
In August 2024, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways introduced the standard operating procedures for the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). This initiative aims to transition from traditional fuel-based harbour tugs to more environmentally friendly options, supporting India’s sustainability and maritime industry objectives. The GTTP plans to replace conventional tugs at major state-owned ports with those powered by cleaner alternative fuels.
The first phase of the programme, expected to conclude in December 2027, involves acquiring or chartering at least two green tugs each for four major ports: Jawaharlal Nehru, Deendayal, Paradip, and V.O. Chidambaranar. This phase will require an estimated investment of ₹1,000 crore, following standardized designs and specifications established by the Standing Specification Committee.
