The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has made history by becoming India’s first Major Port to obtain the prestigious IGBC Platinum Rating, the highest honor given by the Indian Green Building Council. The port’s Administration Building embodies its commitment to sustainability through its Green Policy and waste management strategies. Notable features include rooftop solar panels and a high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) roof coating that reduces the Urban Heat Island effect and enhances energy efficiency. Additionally, IoT water meters and Indoor Air Quality monitoring have achieved a 37% decrease in potable water usage.
In terms of energy usage, the Administration Building is powered entirely by renewable sources, with 89% of electricity produced on-site via solar power. The remaining 11% is sourced from external renewable facilities. Comprehensive measures for ensuring occupant health and safety include a No Smoking Policy, eco-friendly cleaning products, and facilities tailored for accessibility, ensuring senior and differently-abled individuals can navigate the space with ease.
Moreover, the port has received Shunya and Shunya Plus certifications from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, affirming its commitment to on-site renewable energy generation. This includes a Net Zero Energy Building status for some facilities, which produce as much energy as they consume annually. These achievements align with India’s Maritime India Vision 2030, representing a model for sustainable port infrastructure.
Chairperson Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit remarked on the project’s focused upgrades and policies aimed at enhancing environmental performance and occupant welfare. The attainment of both the IGBC Platinum Rating and BEE certification marks a significant milestone for VOC Port, positioning it as a leader in sustainable practices among Indian ports.
