V.Ships, a part of V.Group, has formed a partnership with REV Ocean to provide ship management services for the REV Ocean vessel, which is considered the world’s largest and most advanced research and expedition ship. Currently being constructed at Vard Søviknes in Norway, the vessel will be equipped with advanced technology systems to conduct research across the entire marine ecosystem. Scientists and experts will use the vessel for research expeditions focused on addressing issues such as CO2 emissions, plastic pollution, and unsustainable fishing in the ocean.

The REV Ocean vessel is designed to run on diesel-electric engines, with an additional 3 MW lithium-ion battery pack for peak shaving to ensure optimal efficiency onboard. An independent science and innovation board will oversee and recommend research projects for the vessel to pursue, maintaining high scientific standards and research quality. With the ability to accommodate 106 people, including a crew of 50-65 depending on operations, the ship is equipped with scientific equipment such as echo sounders, sonars, an advanced eco-harvesting trawl sampling system, a submarine, an advanced ROV, and multiple on-board laboratories.

Scheduled for final outfitting in 2025 and full operation beginning in 2027, the REV Ocean vessel will serve as a platform for conducting research to address critical issues affecting the ocean. The vessel’s capabilities and advanced technology will enable scientists to study marine species, collect biomass samples, and conduct research expeditions aimed at finding solutions to environmental challenges facing the ocean.
