India aims to reclaim its maritime dominance as part of the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, according to Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for Phase 2 of Vizhinjam Port, he emphasized that the maritime sector is expected to attract investments exceeding ₹80 lakh crore and create around 1.5 crore jobs in the coming years. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for launching this ambitious vision, which positions India to regain its historical maritime leadership.

Sonowal highlighted Kerala’s strategic importance in this transformation, noting its historical connection to the sea and its role as a gateway for maritime trade. He described Kerala as a potential maritime and logistics hub, owing to its location on key shipping routes and its skilled workforce. Since 2014, the maritime sector has seen significant changes, with various segments now functioning as a cohesive engine for national growth and competitiveness.

The minister reported impressive growth metrics, including a threefold increase in the number of Indian seafarers and a fourfold rise in maritime cruise passengers. He also mentioned that Vizhinjam Port has already handled over 710 vessels, exceeding its operational capacity and establishing direct connections with global markets. Upon completion, the port will significantly enhance its capacity and capabilities, reinforcing India’s position in global maritime trade.
