CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed pride in the establishment of proposed shipyards in Thoothukudi, which are set to cost Rs 30,000 crore. He emphasized that this development will position southern Tamil Nadu prominently on the global shipbuilding map, fostering economic growth and job creation.
In a recent social media post, Stalin highlighted the historical significance of Tamil mariners from the Sangam era, who facilitated trade across oceans. He stated that the modern "Dravidian model" is now steering southern Tamil Nadu toward becoming a hub for shipbuilding, thereby generating substantial employment opportunities.
The Chief Minister’s remarks followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government, Cochin Shipyard Limited, and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. This agreement aims to establish two shipyards, projected to create around 55,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Industries Minister TRB Rajaa noted that these two mega projects signify Tamil Nadu’s rise as a global center for shipbuilding and maritime innovation, unlocking significant avenues for economic advancement and sustainability. Additionally, an MoU between SIPCOT and Thoothukudi VOC Port was signed to form a special purpose vehicle, supporting the development of shipbuilding in light of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Maritime Transport Manufacturing Policy 2025.
