The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has marked a significant achievement with a record cargo movement of 145.84 million metric tonnes (MMT) on National Waterways this year. This milestone was revealed during the Water Voyage Northeast event by Sunil Kumar Singh, Vice Chairman and Chairman In-charge of IWAI.
Singh emphasized the increasing importance of inland water transport in India’s logistics framework, highlighting its role in enhancing trade connectivity and economic integration, especially in the North Eastern Region (NER). During FY 2024–25, over one million metric tonnes of cargo were moved via National Waterways from the NER, showcasing the region’s growing contribution to this sector.
This unprecedented growth is indicative of the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable and cost-effective transportation solutions. The focus on inland waterways is set to bolster regional economies and improve logistics efficiency, thus contributing to a more integrated national trade network.
This achievement underscores the IWAI’s ongoing efforts to develop an effective inland water transport system in India, enhancing India’s position within the global logistics landscape.
